“Man and machine against the sea” is probably the best way to describe
Class 1 World Powerboat Racing. During practice
this morning in Qatar two boats had troubles at sea. The first vessel, the Welmax, rolled on their
first lap at the farthest turn of the circuit.
The crew was unsure what happened in the turn, but the rear end lifted
and the boat hooked and rolled. Both
crew members escaped from the emergency hatch unharmed and dry.
The second troubled vessel, the FA.RO ACCIAI, had troubles in the right
engine bay. While running, the boat
slowed, and soon smoke and flames began to erupt from the hull. The Norwegian driver Pal Virik Nilsen said of
the fire, “Everything seemed to be okay and we were just starting the lap when
I noticed that the oil pressure was falling dramatically.” The driver and
throttleman reached for the fire extinguisher but decided the fire’s size and
300liters of fuel on board were enough to abandon ship.

highlights after the jump.
