Stuff Boaties Like: Shipwreck Furniture

Source: Shipwreck Furniture
The histories of their reclaimed lumber read more like some tragic police report than a storied existence.  The derelict vessel carcasses, forgotten and neglected; hauled from the depths, cut to pieces, and left to bake and decay beneath an unforgiving sun.  As tragic as their endings may have been, there is no denying that they still have character.

Shipwreck Furniture specializes in taking lumber from old wooden hulls that have been neglected, sunk, and scrapped and turns it into functional pieces of art.  Located in South Africa, these unique furniture makers painstakingly remove countless shank nails to ready the timbers for new life.  The results are stunning, rustic pieces that not only have a story, but would look great in any boaties house, house boat, boat house, or yacht.  I’ve got my eye on a few pieces.  Check out their portfolio of furniture in the gallery here.  And read about the history of the wrecks here.  I’ve pick out my favorite pieces and put them in a gallery after the jump.  Enjoy.

Stuff Boaties Like: Below the Boat

The Florida Keys, Source: Below the Boat
For some, being stuck on a boat for weeks at a time while dragging a sonar device to map the ocean floor sounds like absolute torture.  Then again, sometimes great art is born out of much suffering.  Take a look at the bathymetric chart above, imagine the sheer amount of time it took to not only collect the chart data but then to create and assemble each contoured layer.  Truly a work of art any boatie could appreciate.

The handcrafted charts cover U.S. coastlines and interior lakes from the Florida Keys to San Juan Islands, WA and retail between $128 and $298.  Check out Below the Boat’s site to see if they have your favorite near shore adventure.
