Sometimes I have to wonder what people are thinking. Would anyone in their right mind head out offshore in a 12ft boat with high winds and high seas? Not to mention it was 2:30 in the morning (very dark) and their life jackets were stowed away. Two brothers from Miami did just that off the coast of Key Biscayne, FL this past Tuesday.
The two apparently made it about 3 miles offshore when their boat was swamped by a large wave and then capsized. The only item that made it to the surface was a cooler. One man grabbed the lid while the other took the tub. The two treaded water toward shore for about 7 hours. The brother with the cooler tub made it to shore at about 9:30 am and alerted a lady on the beach about his brother. She called 911 and was able to direct the authorities to the other man’s location about a half mile offshore.
The Coast Guard was already deployed for training and diverted to search and rescue the brother floating on the cooler lid. The strongcurrent and a back injury were preventing him from reaching shore. Both men were examined at Mercy Hospital and released with non-life threatening injuries.

As the coast Guard reminded the reporter from ABC news, wear the life-jacket and file a float plan. After those two, you might want to consider investing in one of these locator beacons:
