News: 120ft Catamaran Pulls 145 Skiers to World Ski Record in Tasmania w/video

On Friday January 27th 2012, the 120ft Tasmanian tour boat named The Eagle successfully pulled 145 water skiers to a new world record.  To beat the previous record, The Eagle had to pull more than 114 skiers for at least one nautical mile.  They started the record breaking pull with 154 participants ranging in age from 12 to 60 years old, and ended the mile with 145 skiers still in tow.  But the record attempt wasn’t as easy as just tying on 154 ski ropes and hoping for the best.  In order to keep the massive turbo diesel engines (3100bhp total) on boost, the cat’s props were exchanged for a custom set, designed with increased surface area and decreased pitch.  This allowed the boat to pull the skiers up much faster than previous attempts.  They also attached a custom engineered boom assembly to help pull all those skiers.  The massive boom had to be lifted and attached to the vessel by crane.  Check out the video of the record tow after the jump.  Be warned you may need your sea legs; the video is a bit shaky.
